without 〜「もし〜がなければ」「もし〜がなかったならば」

「もし〜がなければ」(仮定法過去)

「もし〜がなかったならば」(仮定法過去完了)
なお
without 〜 = but for 〜も覚えましょう。
これらは仮定法過去でも仮定法過去完了でもどちらでも使えます。
if 〜節の代わりをするものは他にもいくつかあります。
if 〜があるものを仮定法と考えてはいけません。
if 〜がない仮定法の表現もあるということを覚えておきましょう。

不定詞
To hear him speak English, you would take him for an American.

主語

名詞+and

他にも otherwise(副詞)「もしそうでなければ」など。
ではどうやって仮定法であると判断するのでしょうか?
それは、助動詞の過去です。
助動詞の過去をみたら仮定法ではないかと考えるようにしましょう。
もう一つは、時制がずれていることです。
現在のことなのに過去形、過去のことなのに had p.p. の表現になっていたら仮定法ではないかと考えましょう。
まれに、動詞の原形が使われる表現(仮定法現在)もあります。
