= Five years (have)(passed) since he came to Japan.
「彼が日本に来て５年になる」
やってはいけない書き換え。
× He has come to Japan for five years.
「彼は５年間ずっと日本に来ている」？？？
「彼が日本に来た」のは過去の事実なので過去形で表します。
来たのは1回で、ずっと来ているわけではありません。
ですから、この場合は come を用いた完了形にはできません。
〇 He has lived in Japan for five years.
「彼は５年間ずっと日本に住んでいる」
これなら言っていることはだいたい合っています。
このパターンは他にもあります。
以下の表現は、もっと多くの言い換えが可能です。
It is three years since he died.
= He has (been)(dead) for three years.
= Three years (have)(passed) since he died.
= He died three years ago.
「彼が亡くなって3年になる」
= 「彼が亡くなって3年になる（彼は3年間ずっと死んでいる）」
= 「彼が亡くなって3年が過ぎた」
= 「彼は3年前に亡くなった」
die「亡くなる」（動詞）die - died - died - dying
dead「死んでいる」（形容詞）
品詞に注意してください。
It is three years 〜. は
It has been three years 〜. とすることもあります。
その他
I've known him for ten years.
= I came to know him ten years ago.
= I became (got) acquainted with him ten years ago.
「私は彼と知り合って10年になる」
「私は10年前に彼と知り合った」
などのパターンも覚えておきましょう。
