009. Of their five children, two are in Japan and (the others) are abroad.
「彼らの５人の子供たちの内、２人は日本にいるが、残りの全ては海外にいる」
二つのものが密接にかかわり合い、一方が変化すれば他方も変化するような関係を「相関的な関係」と言います。
例えば、２匹の犬がいたとします。
１匹が白で残りの犬が白だとします。
There are two dogs.
One is white and the other is black.
次に犬が３匹いて１匹が白で残りの犬が全て黒だとします。
Tere are three dogs.
One is white and the others are black.
同じく犬が３匹いて１匹が白、１匹が黒、残りが茶の場合です。
There are three dogs.
One is white, another is black and the other is brown.
任意に選んだものは、another で表します。
このような関係を「相対的な関係」と言います。
そのようなよくある関係を表す表現をまとめて覚えておきましょう。
one 〜 the other …
「一方は〜で他方は…」
one 〜 the others …
「一つは〜で残りは全て…」
one 〜 another …
「一つは〜で別のは…」
（それら以外にも違うものがあることがわかります）
some 〜 others …
「〜もいれば（あれば）…もいる（ある）」
（the が付いていないことに注意）
some 〜 some … となっていることもあります。
残りが全てそうであるときには the が付き、そうでない場合には the がつきません。
なお、another は an + other 「何か他のもの」ということからできた単語です。
不特定のものを表す不定代名詞で単数形扱いであることを覚えておきましょう。
