「その男は前日そこに着き、３日間滞在するつもりだと私に言った」
and の後の that が重要です。

●話法を変えなさい。
009. The man said to me, "I arrived here yesterday, and I'll stay for three days."
「その男は私に『私は昨日ここに着いて、３日間滞在するつもりだ』と言った」
↓
The man told me that he had arrived there the previous day, and that he would stay for three days.
「その男は前日そこに着き、３日間滞在するつもりだと私に言った」
会話の内容が、and や but でつながれた重文である場合、間接話法では and that 〜 や but that 〜 というように 再度 that を入れるべきです。
なぜ、そうする必要があるのか？
接続詞の that が無いと、接続詞以下の内容が、会話の内容か単に事実を述べたものかの区別がつかないからです。
接続詞の and や but の後に that を入れることによってその後の文も話した内容を伝えていることがわかります。
会話の中の内容が重文の場合、and that 〜, but that 〜 で表すと覚えておきましょう。
