まず、sad の変化は、sad - sadder - saddest となります。
ですから、比較級の表現は、sadder than 〜 となるはずです。
これが more sad than 〜 となることがあります。
どういう場合かと言うと、同一（人）物のことを比較する場合です。
ここでは、 I was sad.「私は悲しい」と、 I was angry.「私は怒っている」という私の感情を比べたものです。
つまり、私のことしか言っていないわけです。
次の文と比べてみましょう。
I am taller than him.
「私は彼より背が高い」
この文は、私と彼を比べています。
つまり、他人と比べています。
同一(人）物での比較（他人と比べていない場合）では sadder than angry にはできません。
more 原級 than 原級 ( more sad than angry )を用います。
