●適語選択
003. It is said that he worked hard when he was young.
= He is said (to)(have)(worked) hard in his youth.
「彼は若いころ熱心に働いたそうだ」
「彼が若いときに」という表現も
when he was young
と接続詞を用いて言うこともできるし
in his youth
と前置詞を用いて言うこともできます。
形式主語の it で始まる文は、that 以下の主語を前に持って行って、It と置き換えることがあります。
その場合、後の that節を to 〜にします。
これができるパターンを覚えておきましょう。
It seems that S 〜. → S seems to 〜.「Sは〜するようだ」
It is said that S 〜. → S is said to 〜.「Sは〜するそうだ」
It happens that S 〜. → S happens to 〜.「Sはたまたま〜する」
など。
その際、時制に注意してください。
彼は（今）熱心に働いているそうだ。 → He is said to work hard.
彼は（以前）熱心に働いていたそうだ。 → He is said to have worked hard.
こうすることで、節を句に変形できます。
前後の時制が違う時に、要注意です。
節…２語以上の一まとまりで、一つの品詞の働きをする。その中にSVがある。
句…２語以上の一まとまりで、一つの品詞の働きをする。その中にSVがない。
従って、節中の SV の関係をなくしてしまえば、節を句に変換できる。
